Types of Conformal Coating

OEM offers a wide range of conformal coating from which to choose. We assure that industry standards are met so you can have the best choice for your application. Industry standards include IPC-CC-830, Mil-I-46058C, Mil-P-28809 and UL746C.

We use the leading vendors to assure the highest quality:  Humiseal, Dextor Hysol, Dymax, Miller-Stephenson, Cytec, 3M, Chemtronics and Specialty Polymers Products.

Acrylic (Type AR)
Standard characteristics of acrylic-type coating include:

  • Fast Drying — dries at room temperature within minutes
  • Beneficial electrical and physical properties
  • Fungus resistant
  • Long pot life
  • Low or no exotherm during cure — prevents damage to heat-sensitive components
  • Easy to remove
  • Dielectric withstands > 1500 volts
  • Temperature range of  59° C to 132° C

Polyurethane (Type UR)
Standard characteristics of polyurethane-type coating include:

  • Available in one-part, two-part, UV-curable and water-borne systems
  • Provides excellent humidity and chemical resistance with outstanding dielectric properties for extended periods
  • Difficult to apply and remove
  • Rework is difficult difficult and can be completed only on small areas by burning through the coating with a soldering iron
  • Requires extended curing time, or baking in a recirculating oven
  • Temperature range of  59° C to 132° C

Silicone (Type SR)
Standard characteristics of silicone-type coating include:

  • Ideal for high-temperature requirements, typically up to 200° C
  • Resistant to high humidity and corrosion
  • Strong thermal endurance for high heat-dissipating components
  • Susceptible to abrasion and has a high coefficient of thermal expansion
  • Available in 100% solids heat-curing liquids, 100% solids moisture-curing liquids, 100% solids UV-curable liquids, and solvent-borne reactive coating
  • Rework requires using chemical strippers to remove coating

Temperature range of 65° C to 200° C

Conformal Coating Removal

Not only is OEM an expert in applying conformal coating, but we can also remove existing conformal coating.

Any conformal coatings can be removed if the assembly in question requires minor or isolated repair/rework. There are different removal methods including stripping, solvent, micro-abrasive removal, thermal degradation, plasma stripping, excimer laser and mechanical removal.
